Picea abies

Norway Spruce. A conical tree when young which becomes columnar when mature which has red-brown bark and orange-brown shoots and dark green leaves.

Grow in any deep, moist but well-drained, neutral to acid soil in full sun. Shelter from cold, drying winds. It will reach a height of 20-40m and a spread of 6m.

Picea meyeri

Meyer's Spruce. A medium sized, conical, evergreen tree with bluish-green needles. Produces eye-catching cones which are purple when young and turn brown once mature.

Grow in any deep, moist but well-drained soil in full sun. Shelter from cold, drying winds. It will reach a height of 30m and a spread of 2-3m.

Picea omorika

Serbian Spruce. A narrow, spire-like tree which has pendant branches, the leaves are dark to blue-green with white undersides. The bark is brown and cracks into square plates, the shoots are orange-brown and have black hairs.

Picea pungens 'Glauca Group'

Blue Spruce. Colorado Blue Spruce. A conical to columnar tree which has scaly, purplish grey bark and stout, orange brown shoot. Stiff, stout, sharp pointed bluish grey-green leaves which are covered in glaucous wax. Cylindrical, green, later pale brown cones, 7-12cm long with flexible scales are borne.

Grow in any deep, moist but well-drained soil in full sun. Shelter from cold, drying winds. It will reach a height of 15m and a spread of up to 5m.
