Grapes

Grapes are long-lived, they will be productive for around 40 years but won't bear fruit until three years after planting. Grapes are great for eating fresh or for making into wine.

Grapes need to be grown outdoors in as much sun as possible, site on a south, south-east, or south-west facing wall. Grapes will grow in all soils apart from shallow chalk and clay as long as they are free-draining. A mature grape vine will have an average yield of 6.5kg.

Grapes are available in containers all year round.

Indoor Varieties

Grape 'Black Hamburg'

Red. An easy to grow, early season grape, which has large fruits formed on large bunches which are thin-skinned and are very sweet.

Grape 'Muscat D' Alexandria'

White. A late season grape, which has large fruits formed on large bunches which are succulent and are of high quality. Late ripening so requires heat in autumn.

Outdoor Varieties

Grape 'Boskoop Glory'

Red. This reliable variety is easy to grow and produces a heavy crop of masses of small-medium sized seedless grapes. The flavour is superbly sweet. A good variety for wine making, though not the best. Also has a fine autumn leaf colour.

Grape 'Brandt'

Red. A vigorous, late season dessert grape, which has heavy crops of sweet, small fruits formed on small bunches. Some mildew resistance. Also has a fine autumn leaf colour.

Grape 'Flame'

Red. A vigorous, heavy yielding variety which stores well. Produces large clusters of medium-large red grapes with a sweet flavour.

Grape 'Lakemont'

White. A versatile seedless variety which is able to be grown either indoors or outdoors. Produces large bunches of yellow, oval shapes grapes of excellent quality which have a distinct muscat flavour. Resistant to mildew and downy mildew.
