Dense evergreen clumps of harsh, light to dark olive-green hairlike leaves which have orange, yellow and bronze winter tints. Bears jet-black flower spikes in July which are shorter than the foliage.

Carex morrowii 'Fisher's Form'
A slow creeper which gradually forms a carpet of glossy dark green leaves with yellow lines and stripes becoming whiter.

Carex niger
Black Sedge. Common Sedge. A variable, deciduous Sedge which can sometimes be slowly spreading or sometimes forming tussocks. It has very fine, blue-green foliage. In May the flowers stems appear which carry slender green to dark brown male flowers and plump, spiky female flowers, the female flowers turn black as they ripen into seed heads in July and August.

Carex riparia 'Variegata'
Greater Pond Sedge. A vigorous creeping Sedge which has large stands of arching, sharp-edged, blue-green leaves with bold white stripes. In May and June it bears handsome flowers, the male flower spikes are golden with stamens whereas the female flower spikes are green-brown which hang down into the foliage.

Carex testacea
Slender Sedge. Dense evergreen mounds of rough edged, hair-thin leaves which are olive-green at the base, with rusty-orange tints further up the if grown in full sun, the coloration increases through winter. Very long flower stems grow up to 60cm above the foliage which flop to the ground as the seeds ripen.
