Hornbeam. A handsome, rounded tree with dark-green serrated leaves and a fluted, smooth grey trunk. Leaves turn yellow in autumn. An excellent plant for hedging. Deciduous.

Grow in well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. It will reach an ultimate height of 25m and a spread of 20m.

A narrow and upright tree, becoming broadly conical and more open with age with dark-green serrated leaves and a fluted, smooth grey trunk. Leaves turn yellow in autumn. Deciduous.

Grow in well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. It will reach a height of 15m and a spread of 12m.

Carpinus japonica 'Chinese Lantern'

Japanese hornbeam. A slow growing, rounded tree which has doubly-toothed, oblong-lanceolate, taper-pointed, lush dark green leaves with prominent veining, which turn a fine golden-colour in autumn. Chinese lantern-shaped creamy-white bracts are borne in autumn which mature into brown fruiting catkins. Deciduous.

Grow in well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. It will reach a height of 10m and a spread of 6-7m.
