Gaultheria procumbens

Checkerberry. Wintergreen. A creeping, rhizomatous shrub producing elliptic to elliptic-oblong, pointed, or glandular-tipped, scalloped or bristly toothed, glossy, dark green leaves which when crushed smell of wintergreen. From June to August urn-shaped, white or pale pink flowers are borne which are followed by aromatic scarlet fruit which frequently persist until spring.

Grow in acid to neutral, peaty, moist soil in partial shade, full sun is tolerated where the soil is permantently moist. It will reach a height of 15cm and a spread of 1m.
