Eastern Cottonwood. Necklace Poplar. A fast growing, spreading tree bearing oval to triangular, glossy, dark-purple leaves, which are strongly balsam-scented when young. Red male or green female catkins are borne in early spring. Deciduous.

It will tolerate all but the most waterlogged soil, it is best in fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun. It will reach an ultimate height of 30m and a spread of 20m.

Common Aspen. A medium sized conical tree, later broader with toothed leaves which turn butter-yellow in autumn. The leaves tremble and rattle in the wind. It bears grey-red male or green female catkins in early spring. Deciduous.
